Rohm manufacture thermal print heads with two technologies, thick film type has the advantage of longer life in challenging environments whereas higher print speeds can generally be realised with thin film type.
Direct thermal printing uses special coated paper which changes colour when heat is applied, supermarket receipts are examples of direct thermal printing. Thermal transfer printing uses an ink coated ribbon between the print head and the material to be printed, the heat applied to the ribbon causes ink to be released onto the media. Rohm print heads support both direct thermal and thermal transfer printing.
